It's the medias fault.......I think.

As technology continues to evolve, the need to remind students of the importance of literature has become extremely necessary. Literature is a representation of reality, as we know it. Without text, we cannot continue to evolve and express thought and creativity. We think through language. Therefore, when we do not utilize language through literature, we cannot continue to expand mentally outside the parameters of what we already know as our culture. Exposing an individual to good literary work is equivalent to providing him or her with the finest of educational opportunities. The lack of exposure to literary works is equal to depriving an individual from an opportunity to grow. The media has corrupted students desire to read, telling young students to only do work that are fast and easy. The negative effects of the media on students are manifested in terms of their changing mental setup and the declining quality of their lifestyle. Students, who should invest their time in reading good books, studying, playing outdoors, exercising and engaging in social activities, today, spend their evenings glued to the television. The Internet that is easily accessible exposes them to things that are distractions to their education. Media affects the physical well being of individuals to a certain extent. People spending hours in front of a television or surfing the Internet have to suffer from eye problems and obesity. Long hours of media exposure add to the inactive nature of a person’s lifestyle. The negative psychological effects of media are seen in terms of media changing the people's outlook of looking towards life. Media being one of the prominent sources of looking at the outside world has changed the cultural and moral values of society. A majority of the audiences believe in what is depicted by the media. Many think all of it as true. Students, youngsters and children are bound to mix the reel and the real world and get highly influence by the mass media. The only solution to stopping negative influences of the media is to either be wise enough to believe half of what you hear or ignore the media altogether. It is true that the media dwells mainly on the bad news, and little about all the good things people do in this world. It is because a high percentage of the public demand details and are interested in the blood and guts of a story with all the details in tack. I believe students should put forth more effort to read. I also feel that educators should challenge students more instead of “dumbing down” education.
